What is this New Adult genre?

Everyone that knows me understands how much of a book nerd I am.  No matter where I go I either have a book at hand or my handy Ipad.  It is no surprise that one of my favorite book genres is Young Adult or YA but lately I have been completely drawn by this new genre known as New Adult.

It has been amazing to follow how fast this new genre  has risen to popularity. What is New Adult you ask? New Adult is a story that's a tad too steamy or mature to fall under the Young Adult (YA) umbrella.

The story usually evolves around college aged characters that are seventeen or older in many instances.  I if it’s a bit hard to relate or understand think of it as an NC-17 rating for a movie.

NC-17 – is a trademark used for a movie rating indicating that admission will not be granted to anyone under the age of 17.

I would say that the need for this genre surfaced after the many women that began reading series such as Twilight, Hunger Games, Divergent, etc.  Even though we love YA we were looking for something more realistic.  Something we could relate to and New adult definitely fits the mold.

You want to read a New Adult book… Well look no further here are my top five must read…

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire
Thoughtless by SC Stephens
Easy by Tamnara Weber
Find You In the Dark by A. Meredith Walters
The Sea Breeze Series by Abbi Glines

  1. Very interesting. I love the YA genre and often thought that there should be something in between YA and adult fiction, and here we are! In fact my WIP would fit into this genre very snugly.

I have Beautiful Disaster in paperback on my bookshelf, just begging to be read! Great blog post.
